Also known as IBS, Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a common disorder that affects the large intestine.
Symptoms
The most common signs and symptoms are:
- Abdominal pain, cramping or bloating
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Mucus in the stool
- Excess gas
Causes
Though the exact cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome remains unknown, muscle contractions in the intestine, nervous system, inflammation in the intestines, severe infection and changes in gut microflora, are known to add to the risk.
Treatment
Apart from some changes in your diet and lifestyle, including eating high-fiber foods, drinking plenty of fluids, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep, doctors might suggest medications like fiber supplements, laxatives, anti-diarrheal and anticholinergic medications, tricyclic antidepressants, and SSRI antidepressants.
