ECZEMA
OVERVIEW
Also known as atopic dermatitis, Eczema is a chronic skin disorder that involves scaly and itchy rashes. Though common in children, it can occur at any age.
Symptoms
The signs and symptoms of Eczema vary widely from person to person and include:
- Dry skin
- Itching
- Red to brownish-gray patches
- Small, raised bumps
- Thickened, cracked, scaly skin
- Raw, sensitive, swollen skin from scratching
CausesĀ
Eczema is related to a gene variation that affects the skin's ability to provide protection against bacteria, irritants and allergens. Further, the primary risk factor for Eczema is having a personal or family history of eczema, allergies, hay fever or asthma.
Treatments
Dermatologists can prescribe c reams that control itching and help repair the skin, and drugs to fight infection/control inflammation, as well as wet dressings and light therapy.
