PEPTIC ULCER

OVERVIEW

Also known as PUD, a Peptic Ulcer is the most common ulcer of an area of the gastrointestinal tract that is generally acidic. While a Peptic Ulcer in the stomach is called a gastric ulcer, the one in the duodenum is called a duodenal ulcer

Symptoms

Most common symptoms include:

  • Burning stomach pain
  • Feeling of fullness, bloating or belching
  • Nausea
  • Fatty food intolerance
  • Heartburn

Causes

These occur when acid in the digestive tract eats away the inner surface of the stomach or small intestine. Further, the acid can create a painful open sore that may bleed.
Following are the risk factors:

  • Smoking
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Eating spicy food
  • Untreated stress

Treatments

Apart from antacids and antibiotics, doctors can prescribe medication to block acid production and promote healing, reduce acid production, and protect the lining of your stomach and small intestine.
